13 things you probably didn't know about Morocco!

Moroccan rugs, Tajines, Couscous, Camels in the desert, Marrakech... This is what Morocco is famous for. Today, we want to share with you things you probably do not know about Morocco unless you are Moroccan or have lived there!

1- It is not always sunny. Temperatures may be below 0 during winter in some regions of Morocco.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Morocco. Very cliché, but I love it because it shows the beauty of Marrakech, the red city, with its palms and the snowy mountains of Oukaimaden below.

2- Jimi Hendrix, the iconic singer of the 60's visited Essaouira. Since that day, the city has a love story with the artist. In Morocco, we love to show off and say that the legend was exiled in Morocco to get some rest after he got arrested in Toronto Airport for possession (LOL) and wrote a song inspired by the city of Essaouira.

You can find pictures of him all over the city. A coffeshop has his name, and people hang his posters in their homes.

3- Morocco is one of the largest producers of Cannabis (2nd in the world). Surprising, no? Wine is also produced in Morocco, in Meknes and Casablanca. Our favorite wine of all times is La Ferme Rouge. If you have the chance to go to Morocco, try it :)

4- Christian Louboutin, the most famous shoe designer, reproduced the traditionnal Moroccan slippers, Les Baboosh. They are inspired by the design and architecture of Royal Mansour Hotel in Marrakech AND have a red sole!

5- Many movies and TV shows you have all watched have been shot (or partially shot) in Morocco: Gladiator, Tyrant in Ouarzazate, Homeland in Rabat,Game of Thrones in Essaouira, Mission: Impossible in Marrakech, The Last Temptation of Christ in Ouarzazate, Marrakech and Meknes...

6- Mariah Carey son's name is Moroccan! She named after the Moroccan inspired living room she has in New York. This is where her husband proposed to her. Cute no? :)

Here is a picture of them. Funny that we have the same hair #moroccanstyle.

7- Sweatheart, mon coeur, cuore mio, mi corazon ... all the languages I know use the heart to show love to their loved ones. In Morocco, we use the liver :D Yeah.. we say MY LIVER (Kbida diali).

8- French Montana was born and raised in Casablanca. He left Morocco when he was 13. I loooove this artist because he gives a looot to Morocco. Famous, one of his interplanétaire successes has been shot in Morocco. Click here to watch it and visit part of my beautiful country :)

9- Yves Saint-Laurent had two loves: Pierre Bergé and Morocco. In the 60s, they bought Jardin Majorelle property and moved together to Marrakech. Jardin Majorelle is an absolute must if you ever go to Marrakech. It has a botanical garden with hundreds of species from all over the world, a Berber Museum, a YSL museum and a restaurant.

10- Madonna also is in love with Morocco (I mean, who isn't?!). She celebrated her 60th birthday in Marrakech in 2018. She wore a Berber dress for the occasion :)

11- We speak 5 languages in Morocco! Darija, the Moroccan dialect, is the most spoken one. It is a mix of Arabic, Amazigh, French and Spanish. Arabic is the official language used in all administrations. All Berber people speak Amazigh. In the North of the country, we speak Spanish. Most of Moroccans speak French.

12- Morocco is only 14 kilometers from Spain (35 minutes by boat).

13- Portugal, France and Spain have all colonized Morocco. Fun fact: Melilia and Ceuta are located in Morocco, but are Spanish cities.
